Dishwashing: the quest to avoid formaldehyde
I assumed for years that as long as my dish detergent was phosphate free, I was doing OK. Well, both our hand and automatic products received a "D" from EWG.
Upon skimming the list of ingredients, I found that our dishwasher detergent contained formaledhyde. Formaldehyde is sometimes included for its antibacterial and preservative properties, and possibly also to enhance the smell of scented detergent. However, given its potential as a carcinogen, I wanted to be ready to transition to new detergent asap. Without much thought, I purchased one off the shelf in a hurry without doing any research. Turns out it doesn't rank much better, likely due to its use of -thiazolinones (acute aquatic toxicity, allergic potential, biodegradation concerns). No formaldehyde, but the product still doesn't quite meet my goals for my household or the environment. When this one runs out, my search will continue. Thankfully there are a lot A-B of options left.
Re: Hand washing products - I have so far learned that I don't like grapefruit-scented soap and that cost varies substantially between brands. A 2018 comparison ranked Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds the overall best in terms of cleaning ability and EWG rating. A 2016 comparison ranked Seventh Generation the best.
Ultimately, "best" probably varies by household. I have tried a few products, but so far, my favorite is Ecover's pink geranium ($5 for 25oz at our local whole foods). It works well, has a citrus-leaning scent that my husband likes and meets my goals to find a cost-effective product with a higher EWG rating.
Citrus not your thing? No worries, there are lots of options. You can even make your own! My sister started doing this and reports that her dishes are cleaner than ever. All you need is baking soda, salt, and a few drops of dish soap. Detailed instructions here.
Here's a summary of how the previously noted companies rate on EWG for dish detergent (as of March 2018):
